Affiliate marketing means earning a commission by recommending someone else's product through a unique tracking link. When someone buys through your link, the company pays you a share of the sale. You do not create the product, handle the checkout, or ship anything.

The top guides explain the same five steps but never put real numbers on a beginner's first month. None of them show the click-to-sale-to-commission maths, and none give a 30-day plan with numbers you can check. This guide works the maths out first, then gives the plan.

Three people are involved in every affiliate sale. The merchant owns the product and handles the sale. You, the affiliate, share a special tracking link. The customer clicks your link and buys. Your link tells the merchant the sale came from you, and you get a commission. The customer pays the same price either way.

The process follows five steps. First, join an affiliate program, either directly with a company, through a network like ShareASale or Awin, or through a marketplace program like Amazon Associates. Second, get your unique tracking link for a product. Third, share the link inside helpful content, such as a review, a tutorial, or a comparison. Fourth, a reader clicks the link and buys within the cookie window, which runs from 24 hours to 90 days depending on the program. Fifth, the sale is tracked back to you and the commission is paid, usually 30 to 45 days later after returns are removed.

Worked example: take a $50 product that pays 10% commission, which is $5 per sale. If your content gets 1,000 clicks a month and 2% of clickers buy, that is 20 sales, and 20 times $5 is $100 a month. At 5,000 clicks a month the same maths gives 100 sales and $500 a month. At 10,000 clicks it gives 200 sales and $1,000 a month. If your conversion rate rises to 5%, even 1,000 clicks a month gives 50 sales and $250 a month.

Start with one niche and one traffic source. Pick a topic you can write or talk about for a year, such as budget travel gear, home office tools, or beginner fitness. Choose products you have actually tried, because honest reviews convert better than copied sales copy. Beginner-friendly programs include Amazon Associates, ShareASale, and Awin, and most are free to join.

Your first 30 days look like this. Days 1 to 7: pick your niche and join one program. Days 8 to 21: publish five helpful articles or videos that genuinely answer a question, each with one or two affiliate links where they fit. Days 22 to 30: share each piece once where your audience already is, and check which link got clicks. One tracked click is the first real signal. Expect very little money in month one: most new affiliates earn between $0 and $1,000 a month in their first year, and the first months are usually at the low end of that range.

Affiliate marketing is not multi-level marketing. You earn only from your own referrals and sales. There is no downline, no recruitment requirement, and no need to buy the product yourself. Always disclose that your links earn a commission, because readers trust honest recommendations and the law requires the disclosure.

Q: How much can a beginner earn from affiliate marketing?

A: Most beginners earn little in the first months. A realistic first-year range is $0 to $1,000 a month, growing as clicks and conversions grow.

Q: Do I need a website to start affiliate marketing?

A: No. You can start with social media, a YouTube channel, or a newsletter. A website helps because articles keep earning clicks for months, but it is not required.

Q: How long does it take to make your first affiliate sale?

A: With steady content, most beginners see a first sale within 1 to 3 months. The exact time depends on traffic, the product price, and the conversion rate.

Q: Is affiliate marketing free to start?

A: Yes. Joining affiliate programs is free, and you can start with a free social media account. A website and domain cost extra but are optional at the start.
