A discovery call is the most valuable half hour in freelancing, because it decides whether a project is worth quoting at all. Yet many freelancers walk in with only vague questions, leave without knowing the budget or the real decision-maker, and then spend hours writing a proposal for a project that was never going to close. Preparing sharp, tailored questions in advance, with AI as a drafting partner, changes that completely.

Start by feeding the AI what you know about the prospect: their business, their industry, the service they asked about, and anything you noticed on their website or social profiles. Then ask for a set of twelve discovery questions grouped into four areas: goals and outcomes, scope and deliverables, budget and timeline, and decision process. Grouping the questions this way ensures you cover the business essentials, not just the creative details, and it keeps the call structured instead of meandering.

Budget questions are the ones freelancers avoid most, and they are the ones that matter most. AI can help you phrase them gently, for example by asking what range the client has set aside for this kind of work, or what a successful outcome would be worth to their business. Framing budget as a range, not a single number, makes clients more comfortable answering, and even a rough range tells you whether the project fits your rates before you invest hours in a proposal.

Scope questions should pin down the countable deliverables, the revision expectations, and the inputs the client must provide. Ask what done looks like, who will provide assets and by when, and how many rounds of feedback they expect. These questions prevent the most common project failure: a scope that was never actually agreed, only assumed, by two people who imagined different things.

Decision-process questions save you from pitching to the wrong person. Ask who else needs to approve the project, what their timeline for a decision is, and what would make them choose you over doing nothing or hiring someone else. A prospect who cannot name a decision-maker or a decision date is a prospect who is still browsing, and knowing that early lets you prioritize accordingly.

Use AI after the call as well as before it. Paste your call notes and ask for a structured summary: the client's goals, the agreed scope, the budget range, the timeline, and the open questions, plus a draft follow-up email. This turns messy notes into a clean brief in minutes, and the brief becomes the foundation of your proposal, so the proposal practically writes itself from the discovery summary.

Build a reusable discovery prompt this week, with blanks for the prospect's business and service, and use it before every call. After three or four calls, you will notice a pattern: the freelancers who ask the best questions win the best projects, because clients trust the person who understood their business before quoting a price. Preparation is the quiet advantage, and AI just made it much faster to get.

A final discovery technique is the pre-call research prompt, run the day before each call, which asks AI to summarize the prospect's business, recent news, competitors, and visible gaps in their marketing or product, based on the public information you provide. Walking into a call already knowing the prospect's market position lets you ask sharper questions and make observations that show genuine preparation, which clients notice and remember. Be careful to verify anything the AI claims before repeating it on the call, since a confidently wrong fact about their business damages credibility faster than no fact at all. Use the research as background for your questions, not as a script, and let the client correct or confirm your understanding, since that conversation itself reveals how they see their own business.
